City Focus: Newcastle upon Tyne by ade

4 Jan
Originally built on wealth earned in Georgian & Victorian times from shipping, heavy industry & coal mining, the city centre of Newcastle underwent huge redevelopment in the 1960s. The vision was to create a ‘Brasilia of the North’ and numerous large modernist buildings were commissioned and constructed. Often built from concrete and brutal in design, these new buildings contrasted sharply with their older neighbours that had been spared demolition. As the city moves on, these buildings themselves are being demolished to make way for a new vision of Newcastle as a centre for retail, culture and leisure.
